Be My Knife is a novel about the writer obsession, compulsion and desire. The writing is dense, challenging and full of moments of great poetry and imagination, but it can be difficult and obscure. Stylistically Grossman experiments with plot and character in the great tradition of modernism, and Yair is reminiscent of the tormented "little men" in the works of Joyce and Beckett.
